Industrial Plant Design
Nexus Automation is a company highly specialized in the internal design of automated industrial plants. Thanks to dedicated technical departments and the use of the latest generation software, it is able to develop tailor-made solutions completely in-house, opting for an integrated approach that guarantees total control over every phase of the project, from initial conception to final implementation, ensuring maximum quality, efficiency and reliability of the systems implemented. The ability to manage the entire design cycle within the company translates into a significant competitive advantage for customers, who benefit from solutions perfectly tailored to their specific needs and a single, responsible partner throughout the entire journey.
The application of automation to the design phase allows a clear reduction in the overall time and costs of the project; the use of cutting-edge design programs and tools, combined with Nexus Automation’s twenty years of experience in the industrial automation sector, makes it possible to anticipate and solve potential critical issues, optimizing every single detail well before the physical construction of the plant. Through this proactive approach, errors and costly rework can be minimized during construction, ensuring greater accuracy and more efficient resource management.
In a constantly evolving and, moreover, increasingly competitive sector, the ability to design in-house is a strategic advantage that should not be underestimated. Relying on the design autonomy offered by Nexus Automation means obtaining greater flexibility in responding to the most complex and specific requests, better adaptability to changing market needs and a remarkable speed in time-to-market, which allows companies to quickly implement innovative solutions.
The industrial automation market continues to grow exponentially every year and Nexus Automation is ready to lead this change with its expertise, innovative vision and constant pursuit of excellence.
Design Phases
When it comes to creating a complete, automated and tailor-made industrial plant, Nexus Automation follows a methodical and rigorous path, divided into well-defined phases to ensure maximum efficiency and total control of the project. The process, specifically, always begins with the customer’s request, the first and fundamental point of contact that defines specific needs and objectives. This is followed by a careful inspection directly at the customer’s production environment, in order to understand the real needs, physical constraints, operating conditions and existing infrastructure and collect all the information necessary for a targeted design.
Subsequently, Nexus Automation proceeds with an in-depth feasibility study , which evaluates both the technical and economic aspects of the project; This study determines the feasibility of the proposed solution, identifying the most appropriate technologies and estimating the preliminary time and costs. At the same time, a detailed process analysis is conducted to understand each step of the operation to be automated, which helps guide the selection of the most suitable field instruments , such as sensors, actuators, valves and other components necessary for the control and execution of tasks.
After defining the feasibility and technical requirements, a more precise economic feasibility estimate is drawn up, followed by the preparation of a detailed estimate; The latter includes an exhaustive description of the proposed solution, costs, implementation times and all technical specifications. The negotiation phase then begins, during which the final agreements are defined and the mutual commitment is formalized.
Once the agreement has been reached, the R&D (Research and Development) project initiation phase begins: Nexus Automation’s engineering team develops innovative and customized solutions, including mechanical and electrical design and, if necessary, the development of prototypes or simulations.
This is followed by the mechanical and electrical assembly of the system, which takes place internally at the Nexus Automation workshops or at selected partners, accompanied by Software development for PC/PLC/HMI (Human-Machine Interface), which is essential for programming the system’s control logic, creating intuitive user interfaces and developing supervision systems.
Every single part designed and assembled is subjected to rigorous blank tests (FAT – Factory Acceptance Test), which are performed internally by simulating real operating conditions to verify the correct functioning of each component and subsystem before shipment. Only after successfully passing the FAT, we proceed with the field tests (SAT – Site Acceptance Test) which, instead, are carried out directly at the customer’s site, with the plant installed and connected to the real production environment, to verify its integration and final performance.
At the end of all the tests and the various checks, the plant is delivered turnkey to the customer, ready to be put into production, with the support of Nexus Automation for the start-up and training of the staff.

Regulations and reference standards
The design of industrial plants is not only a matter of efficiency and technology, but also of strict compliance with European and international regulations that guarantee safety, quality and legal compliance. Nexus Automation pays scrupulous attention to these aspects, ensuring that every system designed and built fully meets the highest standards.
Among the fundamental regulations in this area stand out:
- the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which establishes the essential safety and health requirements for the design and manufacture of machinery;
- the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), which ensures that electrical equipment operates safely;
- the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU), relating to electromagnetic compatibility, which is essential to ensure that systems are not only efficient but also intrinsically safe and reliable in the industrial environment.
In addition to European directives, Nexus Automation also complies with specific international technical standards, in particular:
- ISO 12100, which defines the general design principles for machinery safety, providing a methodological framework for risk assessment and reduction;
- IEC 60204-1, which regulates the electrical equipment of machines, ensuring high standards for components and wiring;
- EN ISO 13849-1, which is essential to ensure the reliability and performance level of control systems related to machine safety.
The regulatory and quality framework is complemented by system standards such as ISO 45001, which promotes the creation of healthy and safe working environments through an occupational health and safety management system, and ISO 9001, which sets out the requirements for a quality management system.
Nexus Automation also enjoys the ISO 9001:2015 standard, guaranteeing that the company’s internal production flow is characterized by high precision, impeccable organization and a constant commitment to continuous quality improvement at every stage, from design to final testing.
